Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)

Status: This bill was introduced on October 26, 2011 and was thought to have died in committee. The bill was briefly revived in 2012 but was postponed (CNN Money, 2012) following a massive Internet protest.

What would it be like without important Internet sites like Wikipedia and Word Press.  Netizens got a chance to find out on January 18, 2012 when many popular websites such as Wikipedea, Reddit and WordPress went dark in protest to H.R. 3261, the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “Protect IP Act” (PIPA)  (CBS News, “SOPA/PIPA, What you need to know). (See the discussion of PIPA.) Although SOPA and PIPA are usually combined in articles and the literature, they will be discussed here in two sections.
